Prioritising

I wanted to touch on a key aspect of my coaching. The art of prioritising and why I think it's so important for stress management. It ties in nicely with a couple of other pieces I've got drafted around procrastination and perfectionism, but I thought I'd lead with this one!

For many of us in today stress seems to be an inevitable part of our lives, and unfortunately its not the good kind of stress. Many of my clients describe hectic work schedules with an ever growing list of personal responsibilities, the demands on our time and energy can and do feel overwhelming. Working in the space of stress management and burnout prevention I guess it's a bit up close and personal because this is my core area of service but I've seen firsthand how mastering the art of prioritising can really make a difference to my clients, not just in their productivity but also in their overall well-being.

Prioritising is more than just making to-do lists or organising tasks based on deadlines. It's about consciously choosing where to focus your time, energy, and resources to align with your values, goals, and responsibilities. These are some of the things I cover off with my clients:

Reduction in Stress Levels: When we prioritise effectively, we gain clarity on what truly matters and can focus our attention on the most important tasks. This starts with acknowledging what is in our control and what is not. You need to be really clear on the things you actually have to do vs the things that you can't do. This really helps to reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed by our never-ending to-do lists.

Increased Productivity: Sometimes this can feel a bit 'chicken an egg' to begin with, but prioritising allows you to allocate your resources efficiently, ensuring your time and energy is having the greatest impact. By focusing on high-priority activities first, you are able to accomplish more in less time, boosting your productivity and sense of accomplishment.

Time: Something we would all like more of. Unfortunately its a finite resource, so being really clear on how you choose to spend it ultimately determines your success and fulfillment. Prioritising helps you to make the most of your time by identifying tasks that are urgent versus those that are important but not time-sensitive. Using your time wisely, can help you to avoid procrastination and support progress towards achieving your goals.

There are so many other things that are positively impacted by getting really good at prioritising, better work-life balance, better decision making, increased focus and clarity and the ultimate - Preventing Burnout.

I'll say it again for those in the back, chronic stress is getting worse in our workplaces, often for a number of reasons by for many it's a lack of boundaries and taking on too much without a proper analysis of what is actually needed AND achievable.
